Tip 10—Incremental Percolation

When you're working on complex projects that you cannot finish in one sitting, incrementally percolate your progress . . .

Complex tasks that require reviews and input from others can sometimes get clogged up in your queue. You don't want to submit an incomplete draft or you don't have all the answers for a specific summary for a meeting. Leave it. Let it percolate while you work on something else. For example, when you're energized to write a blog, draft a sales pitch, or outline a meeting that has to be reviewed by others, do as much as you can while you're feeling productive. Take a break. Walk your dog. In the morning before work, send stuff out that requires responses and then get ready for work and travel in. On the way, you might have some more tweaks that you think of that you can shoe horn in when you arrive. In some cases, you'll already have some good input from your review team as you arrive at work. Do this same kind of strategy for around-the-house projects like painting or gardening. Let things percolate.
